THE MOST IMPORTANT THING [FOR KIDS] - Luke 10:38-42 - 18/7/2010

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING [FOR KIDS] by Rev Alan Shaw 18/7/2010

THEME: Keeping focussed on what’s really important in life.

OBJECTS: MacDonald's meal bag, napkin, cup of flat Coke, lid, straw, container of cold fries, burger wrap

>>2>> ? Do you ever get hungry during church?

Sometimes I get so hungry that I just don't think I can make it through the sermon. Today was one of those mornings, so I went to MacDonald's on the way to church & bought a Meal Deal.
If you’ll excuse me, I’m going to eat it right now.
(Take items from bag one at a time, commenting on each one. When all items have been removed, show surprise & concern that something seems to be missing -- the hamburger!)

? Can you imagine that? I was in such a rush to get all these things to go with my hamburger that I forgot the most important thing: I forgot to get the hamburger!

!! You must think I’m pretty silly forgetting the hamburger!! After all, that was the most important thing.
Our Bible story today is about someone else who forgot the most important thing.

>>3>> One day as Jesus & his disciples were walking, they came to a town where some friends lived named Mary & Martha – they were sisters.

>>4>> Mary & Martha were excited to get a surprise visit from Jesus & his friends. Martha quickly started to get a meal ready. There was no MacDonald’s or Hungry Jacks back then! She had to cook enough for at least 15 people! That’s a lot of food!

While Martha was busy preparing & cooking in the kitchen, Mary just sat at Jesus’ feet & listened to him teaching his disciples about God.

>>5>> Martha became angry that Mary wasn’t helping, so she said to Jesus, "Can you see that my sister isn’t helping me? Tell her to help me!"
>>6>> Jesus answered, "Don’t be angry, Martha. Some things are more important than others. Mary has done the right thing. She wants to listen to me.”

[PAUSE] Many people today still make the same mistake that Martha made.

>>7>> We can get so busy working – doing school work – playing - watching TV - that we can forget the most important thing: to spend time with Jesus!
Praying is one way we can spend time with Jesus.
We must be careful that we don't get so busy doing good things that we leave out the most important thing! After all, Jesus is more important than anything!

PRAY: Dear Jesus, please forgive us when we get so busy with other things that we forget to spend time with you. Help us to remember that you are the most important thing in our lives. Amen.
